Director's note...
As I think about our agency mission to provide emergency shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic violence, it is very apparent to me that our greatest role is simply to be the doorway to hope for those who are endangered or affected by domestic violence. Our strength is in meeting the needs of those who have been made vulnerable by exposure to violence and helping them find solutions for problems that seem overwhelming. Our families often face homelessness, alcohol and drug issues, lack of transportation and inadequate personal support and financial resources. Our vision for clients is that they will always receive comprehensive and quality services from us to ensure that they are on the road of safety and well-being.We continue to meet this vision in the face of growing client needs.
In 2001 we saw an increase in sheltered nights of 47%, and a 41% increase in meals provided for our families. The egal advocacy department responded to 50% more calls for assistance this past year. Thanks to United Way and a grant from the David Foundation we were able to greatly increase the prevention work that is done in area high schools for early identification of dating violence. We look towards the future with hope, the hope that shines from the eyes of those who are now living safer lives, and the hope that comes from the community and it's support of our programs.
This year will see the beginning of our long awaited dream of providing a new shelter and support services in one place. With the blessing of area foundations, United Way and community supporters we will continue to provide safety and hope for families today and tomorrow.
